About my work:
I utilise materials and process to investigate the inherent qualities of nature – whether it’s the nature of the particular chosen material or process, the nature of the world around us or the nature of our selves. The paintings display an organic sensibility that is open to individual interpretation. They often fluctuate between microscopic and macroscopic readings.
There is no explicit narrative or representation as such as I want the painting as an object to create a mood or opportunity for contemplation on the more essential aspects of life.
By emptying out ‘content’ from the painting, I am seeking to create a physical encounter between the work and the viewer through the use of structure, process and materiality. The viewer is constantly referred back to the material surface of the work and a relationship forms between the viewer’s reading of the physical process/materiality and the associations made by the viewer in his attempt to assign meaning to the work. ‘Content’ is thereby shifted out of the painting into the cognitive process of the viewer.
About the artist:
I made the decision to pursue my ambition to become an artist after several years working in the City as a corporate finance lawyer and investment banker.
I began by completing an intensive Foundation Course at the Slade School of Fine Art in the summer of 2001. I was then offered a place on the BA degree in Fine Art at the Slade and graduated in June 2005.
